David A. Jasen’s book A Century of American Popular Music (published 2002) collects 2000 songs from the 20th century. It is an alphabetical listing of song titles, their songwriters, and the year the song was written. The list is unranked. The book rarely offers more than a sentence about a song, usually indicating who introduced the song in vaudeville or in a show and who had the hit recording. Sometimes information is offered about how high the song peaked and/or how many weeks it was on the Billboard pop chart. ![]() Dave’s Music Database has taken that list and added columns for the highest-rated version of the song according to the DMDB and, instead of the year the song was written, the year that the highest-rated version was released. Click on song titles for links to more detailed DMDB pages. Noteworthy: 583 songs on this list rank in the top 1% of Dave’s Music Database. Another 321 songs on the list make the top 2%. You can see a ranking of the top 500 songs from the book here. Click here to see other lists from critics and individuals and here to see other lists from publications and/or organizations. |

Not only is this a great site because of your own aggregate lists, but it's also a great site for showcasing other lists as well. Taking this list of 2000 songs and then adding to it the #1 ranked version of each song is something no other site would do. Thanks for all the hard work you've put into not only this database, but your other 2 as well. It's like the Library of Alexandria for music.
ReplyDeleteThanks, James! I appreciate the support.
