David A. Jasen:

The Top 500 Songs from 1899-1999

David A. Jasen’s book A Century of American Popular Music (published 2002) collects 2000 songs from the 20th century. It is an alphabetical listing of song titles, their songwriters, and the year the song was written. You can see the full list here.

The list is unranked, but Dave’s Music Database has ranked the songs from Jasen’s book based on their overall status in the DMDB. The results posted here are for the top 500 songs. Overall, this is a first-rate list because it represents more years than most lists. It does, however, short change harder rock. In a list of 2000 songs, it is hard to imagine Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’ Mine,” and Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” (all which rank in the DMDB’s top 100 of all time) being omitted. Instead, this list is more focused on middle-of-the-road music.
