UK Official Charts: 70th Anniversary

70 Years of the Official Singles Chart

In 2022, the UK Official Charts celebrates its 70th anniversary. In honor of the event, the NOW That’s What I Call Music! series released a five-disc box set gathering 100 of the chart’s 1400+ chart toppers over the last 70 years. The track order of the set is erratic, so I’ve redone the list here in chronological order. The dates indicate when the song hit #1 on the UK Official Charts.

The initial intent behind this list was to pinpoint a few key candidates in the birth of rock and roll. As one can see by the multiple resources at the bottom of this page (which includes an entire box set and book devoted to the topic), there is no definitive agreement. In addition, efforts to create a list of candidates for first rock song so regularly crossed over with lists of early rock and roll songs that this became an amalgamation of the two. In other words, this evolved from not just a look at the birth of rock and roll but a glimpse of its “toddler years,” if you will, as well. That leaves it up to you, the reader, to form your own opinions aout which songs are the most important in the early development of rock and roll.

Top 500 Songs (1891-2019)

Digital Dream Door is one of the best sites out there for best-of music lists. Lists cover different eras, genres, and themes. The temptation was to simply duplicate their “1000 Greatest Popular Songs of All Time” list here, but that didn’t seem the best option because there are so many other song lists on the site that it seemed imperative to integrate them in as well.

Therefore this list is created by aggregating the more than 40 lists indicated at the bottom of this page. However, to still give the original 500 songs list appropriate impact, it was then averaged with the overall ranking of the aggregate. Here are the end results:
