Dave’s Faves: The Grand Library

Dave’s Faves:

The Grand Library

This is it. My personal picks for the “grand” library. I use the term to signify my top 1000 favorite songs. This is still a work in progress, but will eventually be another book in the Dave’s Music Database series.

Recorded Versions Only:

I did apply a few rules. First, all entrants had to be recorded versions of songs. That excluded songs that may be quite well known (“Happy Birthday to You,” “Row Row Row Your Boat”) but for which I do not have a specific recorded version.

Versions of Songs:

Second, only one version of a song has been officially entered into the library, even if the title appears more than once in my top 1000 favorites. That means that even though Tori Amos’ version of “Smells Like Teen Spirit” is one of my top 1000 favorites, only the Nirvana original is listed. The version in the library doesn’t necessarily have to be the original of the song, however. The one in the library is the one which is ranked highest. That means, for example, that Johnny Cash’s take on “Hurt” is listed instead of the original version by Nine Inch Nails.

Two for One

There are also a few occasions where two songs are listed as one entry. For example, Queen’s “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions” are two separate songs but are so consistently played together that they are listed as one entry in this book.

Why Not Ranked?

I decided to list the songs alphabetically by recording acts instead of a ranking of the top 1000. I did this for several reasons. I don’t want readers getting hung up on whether they think a song is ranked too high or too low. I also thought this list flowed better having songs listed by the acts. You can, however, see my top 100 songs here.

Years

Songs are listed by the first year in which they were commercially available. That means a song such as the Eagles’ “Hotel California” will be noted as a 1976 release because that’s when the album came out, even though it wasn’t released as a single until 1977.

My Tastes

Finally, I make no apologies for my specific tastes. No one should apologize for his or her particular likes. Like what you like and do so unashamedly. That means the reader will see a library heavily dominated by music from the 1980s and the classic rock genre. That means there may be way too many Marillion entries for your taste, especially if you’ve never heard of the band. There’s a reason the library has 1000 entrants. There’s bound to be something to meet most tastes.
