About the Song:

Bruce Springsteen released his fifteenth studio album, Magic, on September 25, 2007. The album marked a reunion with the E Street Band, with whom Springsteen had last recorded The Rising in 2002, after two albums without them.

The lead single, “Radio Nowhere,” precededed it by a month. It was a raucous, get-up-on-your-feet-and-dance anthem, but failed to even dent the Billboard Hot 100. Sadly, “The Boss” was far removed from his top-40 days, having last reached those upper echelons with the #19 hit “Secret Garden” a decade earlier. The song did reach #2 on the adult alternative charts, a format that often celebrated heritage artists that other radio stations had abandoned. It also had some success in Europe, reaching #2 in Norway and Ireland. WK

“Radio Nowhere” was played at every show but one for the 2007-2008 Magic tour, starting as the set opener and later shifting to the second song slot. WK It was the only song from Magic which was regularly performed on the subsequent 2009 tour in support of the Working on a Dream album.

There was some controversy generated when it was suggested that the guitar riffs and chord progression at the onset of the song were similar to the 1981 hit “867-5309/Jenny” by Tommy Tutone. The lead singer, Tommy Heath, even said “I think it’s close enough that if I wanted to [take legal action], I could.” WK He said later, though, that he didn’t intend to do so and felt honored by any similarity between the songs. WK

The song won Grammys for Best Rock Song and Best Solo Rock Vocal Performance.
