United States: Biggest #1 Songs

USA’s Biggest #1 Pop Songs:

1890-2026

These are the biggest #1 pop songs in the history of the United States pop charts from 1890 to present. Songs could have hit #1 on any of the following charts:

Links go to specific lists of the biggest songs of all time for that chart.

All songs with 10 or more weeks on any of these charts are listed. If a song hit #1 on more than chart, only the chart where the song had the most weeks is noted. However, at times Hit Parade and Cashbox did not designate a specific artist with the #1 song. For example, “Some Enchanted Evening” was a #1 song on Hit Parade in 1949, but because there were multiple versions of the song out at the time, it wasn’t credited to any specific artist. In such cases, this list attributes the song only to an artist if that artist also hit #1 on another of the noted charts.

One last note – in the event of ties, songs are ranked according to most overall points in Dave’s Music Database. For songs which hit #1 multiple times, the version which accumulated the most points is used.

See other chart-based lists here.

Ivor Novello Awards: Song Winners Ranked

Ivor Novello Awards:

Top 100 Songs

Named after entertainer Ivor Novello, these awards for songwriting and composing – nicknamed The Ivors – are presented annually by the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA). Since it was founded in 1956, the organization has given out more than 1000 awards to primarily British and Irish songwriters and composers. The awards are given to performers, albums, and songs in a variety of categories. As stated on their website, they “celebrate, honour and reward excellence in songwriting and composing…They are named in honour of Ivor Novello, Britain’s most successful and distinguished theatrical composer at the time, and represent the pinnacle of musical achievement and peer recognition in the music industry.”

This page is dedicated to a top 100 ranking of those songs which I know have won Ivor Novello Awards.

Elton John: Top 100 Songs

Elton John

Top 100 Songs

Pop/rock singer/songwriter and pianist born Reginald Kenneth Dwight on 3/25/1947 in Pinner, Middlesex, England. At age 7, he started formal piano lessons. At 11, he won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music. He joined his first group, Bluesology, in 1962. He took his name from members Elton Dean and Long John Baldry. Teamed up with lyricist Bernie Taupin in 1967; they’ve since collaborated on more than 30 albums. Formed Rocket Records in 1973. Played the “Pinball Wizard” in the movie version of Tommy. Elton was the #1 pop artist of the ‘70s; in 2013, Billboard ranked him the third all-time Hot 100 artist behind The Beatles and Madonna.

Two of his songs (“Candle in the Wind (Goodbye England’s Rose)” and “Your Song”) are featured in the DMDB book The Top 100 Songs of the Rock Era 1954-1999. His album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (1973), is featured in the DMDB book The Top 100 Albums of All Time.
