The Billion Airs Club

YouTube has become the 21st century’s version of MTV; that is, it is the go-to place for music videos. On December 1, 2012, “Gangnam Style” by Psy became the first music video to surpass one billion views. Since then, more than five hundred music videos have passed that mark. This page lists all those videos alphabetically by artist.

Note: if there are multiple versions of a song (such as an official video, a lyric video, or live performances) the numbers have been consolidated into one figure as long as all the versions are the same song by the same performer.

About the Song:

With thirteen #1 Hot 100 hits between them since 2008, a collaboration between Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars was a no brainer. The “soft rock-leaning” WK “Die with a Smile” didn’t disappoint; it gave Gaga her sixth chart-topper and was the ninth for Mars. Interestingly though, it took 20 weeks to reach the top in an era when songs often debut in the pole position. The song is about “a powerful longing to be with a loved one, highlighting the urgency and depth of their love in the face of uncertainty and potential endings.” WK

Mars invited Gaga to the studio where he had started the track. She said she was blown away by what she heard. The duo finished writing and recording it the same day. WK Gaga said they were inspired by collaborations between Carole King and James Taylor, wanting harmonies that had a ‘70s vibe to them. WK

Clash magazine’s Robin Murray said the song displays “undoubted chemistry” and “simple exuberant fun.” WK Rolling Stone’s Brittany Spanos said it “puts the duo’s soaing vocals on full display.” WK Songfacts.com says “the two bounce off each other’s vocals with all the chemistry of a well-matched tennis pair.” SF

“Smile” became the longest-reigning daily number-one song (2oo non-consecutive days) in the history of Spotify WK and was the fastest song in Spotify history to reach both one billion (96 days) and two billion streams. This list doesn’t even take into consideration albums which didn’t get nominated and should have. Some contests admittedly had very worthy candidates pitted against each other, such as OutKast Speakerboxxx/The Love Below vs. the White Stripes Elephant or Eric Clapton’s Unplugged vs. U2’s Achtung Baby. In other cases, such as The Bodyguard soundtrack vs. R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People or Celine Dion’s Falling into You vs. Beck’s Odelay the higher-ranked album would have been a more creative pick, but it is no surprise that the Grammys went with the more middle-of-the-road option.

Still other times it is hard to fathom how a classic such as Pink Floyd’s The Wall can’t boast Grammy-winning status while Christopher Cross can. Vaughn Meader’s comedy album The First Family over Ray Charles’ Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music? Herbie Hancock’s River: The Joni Letters instead of Amy Winehouse Back to Black? It’s also hard to not refer to the awards as the “Grannies” when they opt to honor Steely Dan for Two Against Nature TWO DECADES past their prime compared to Eminem at the height of his powers with The Marshall Mathers LP. Alas. It is what it is.
