You Tube:

The Billion Airs Club

YouTube has become the 21st century’s version of MTV; that is, it is the go-to place for music videos. On December 1, 2012, “Gangnam Style” by Psy became the first music video to surpass one billion views. Since then, more than five hundred music videos have passed that mark. This page lists all those videos alphabetically by artist.

Note: if there are multiple versions of a song (such as an official video, a lyric video, or live performances) the numbers have been consolidated into one figure as long as all the versions are the same song by the same performer.

Videos ranked in the top 100 are marked with an asterisk. You can see the list of “YouTube’s Top 100 Most-Viewed Videos of All Time” here.

About the Song:

In the same year that Beyoncé got a lot of attention and flack for making a country album, singer and rapper Post Malone dipped his toes into the country pool as well. In fact, he’d guested on “Levii’s Jeans” on Beyoncé’s Cowboy Carter country album. On his sixth album, F-1 Trillion, Post recorded songs with heavy hitters in the country world including Luke Combs, Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Dolly Parton, Blake Shelton, Chris Stapleton, and Hank Williams Jr.

The album’s lead single, “I Had Some Help,” paired Malone with Morgan Wallen, the hottest name in country music. His song “Last Night” from the previous year not only spent a whopping 25 weeks atop the country chart, but with 16 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, it was one of the biggest #1 pop songs of all time and Billboard’s song of the year.

The song gave Wallen his second trip to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 and Malone’s sixth. The song became the first in history to debut atop the Billboard Hot 100 and country chart and hold that spot for its first five weeks. WK It also set a single-day streaming record on Spotify for a country song – 14 million streams. WK Just four weeks earlier, Malone had another high profile duet debut atop the Hot 100 – “Fortnight” with Taylor Swift.

“I Had Some Help” is “about the messy realities of a love gone south.” SF Malone and Wallen trade verses about women with whom they’re breaking up. While the women accuse the men of being the problem, Malone and Wallen assert that the women “share the responsibility for the relationship’s demise.” SF

The song was a true collaboration between the two musicians’ camps featuring Malone’s producer Louis Bell as well as Wallen’s regular co-writers Charlie Handsome, Ashley Gorley, and Ernest. “I Had Some Help” won the People’s Choice Country Award for Song of the Year and garnered Grammy nominations for Best Country Song as well as Best Country Duo/Group Performance.

About the Song:

Taylor Swift was born in 1989 in West Reading, Pennsylvania. She released her first album in 2006 while still a teenager. While she started as a country singer, she quickly crossed over to pop. She reached a commercial zenith with her 1989 album in 2014 and then seemed to be dropping off slightly with her next few albums, which included two indie-folk style albums in 2020.

In 2022, she roared back with the hugely successful Midnights, propelled by “Anti-Hero,” her biggest #1 hit to date, and locking down the entire top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 the week the album was released. Her Eras Tour launched in 2023 and over a year-and-a-half became the highest-grossing tour of all time, grossing more than $1 billion.

In the middle of the tour, she released her eleventh album, The Tortured Poets Department. The lead single, “Fortnight,” is “an ‘80s-inspired downtempo electropop tune” SF reminiscent of power ballads by Roxette, Cutting Crew, and Phil Collins. WK The narrator is in an unhappy marriage and happens to live next door to her also-married ex-lover. “Fortnight” is a British term meaning two weeks, which references the doomed couple’s “fleeting romantic relationship that lasted only two weeks.” SF

The song paired her with Post Malone (who assumes the voice of the ex-lover/neighbor). When it debuted at #1 it became her twelfth chart-topper and his fifth. It set the record for the highest single-day streams on Spotify WK and garnered Grammy nominations for Song and Record of the Year. It also won MTV’s Video of the Year award.

About the Song:

Everyone has songs that are personally iconic for them. Some resonate as mantras (Indigo Girls’ “Closer to Fine,”Michael Franti’s “Everyone Deserves Music”) or reflections on life (XTC’s “Dear God,” Crowded House’s “Silent House”). There are those that capture pivotal moments of young adulthood either in mood or message (Styx’s “Renegade,” David + David’s “Welcome to the Boomtown”). For me, there are also songs that will forever represent a time where my sense of musical discovery expanded (Marillion’s “Kayleigh,” Tori Amos’ “Silent All These Years”). On the latter front, most people tend to abandon the pursuit of new music in their thirties, preferring to soak up the nostalgia of their youth. Even at 57, however, I’m always interested in finding new artists, new songs, and new sounds. “Dial Drunk” became one of those latter songs.

My son Evan was home from college over Christmas break 2023 and expressed surprise at hearing me listen to Noah Kahan on Spotify. Evan had just seen Kahan live in New York with a friend. I confessed that the song “Dial Drunk” had just randomly popped up on my playlist and I hadn’t been familiar with the artist although I’d heard the song a few times. The song became a launching point for me as I delved deep into Kahan’s music and was especially taken by the slew of musicians with whom he’d dueted (Zach Bryan, Brandi Carlile, Hozier, Kacey Musgraves, Post Malone, and Joy Oladokun). It sent me down a very welcomed rabbit hole for 2024 as I embraced what I call “New Americana” music, which included the artists I’ve listed as well as Benson Boone, Shaboozey, Teddy Swims and others.

As for Noah Kahan’s background, the folk-pop singer/songwriter was born on January 1, 1997 in Strattford, Vermont. He released his first album, Busyhead, in 2019 but it wasn’t until his third album, 2022’s Stick Season, that his career really took off. The double-platinum release peaked at #2 on the Billboard album chart propelled by the top-10 success of the title cut as well as top-40 success with “Northern Attitude” and “Dial Drunk.” The latter – the third single – caught the attention of rapper and singer Post Malone. Kahan said of the collaboration, which included a new verse written by Malone, that “it has been a dream come true to make this collaboration happen.” WK

Kahan also said of the song in general, “I never know when or why a song is going to land and to see the meaning and connection you have drawn from this track has inspired me in a way I have never been inspired before.” WK Songfacts.com said of the song, “In this raw and introspective narrative, Noah Kahan finds himself in a dire situation, having just been arrested for drunk driving and desperately needing help. Struggling with his own demons and breaking a promise, he dials his ex's phone number, which he knows will go unanswered. From the very beginning of the song, the tone is set, as he reflects on the irony of remembering his promise not to contact his ex, yet succumbing to the allure of the past while under the influence of alcohol.” SF

Juno Award: International Albums of the Year, 1975-2022

Juno Award:

International Album of the Year, 1975-2022

The Juno Awards are given to Canadian musical artists and bands by the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. They are the equivalent of the Grammys in the United States. They were most recently given on June 29, 2020.

The International Album of the Year, generally given to a non-Canadian album, has been awarded since 1975. It has also been known as “Best Selling International Album” (1975-1980), “Best Selling Album by a Foreign Artist” (1992), and “Best Selling Album (Foreign or Domestic)” (1993-2002). Because of the occasional rule changes, Canadians Bryan Adams and Celine Dion have won the award.

About the Song:

Singer/songwriter and rapper Post Malone was born Austin Richard Post in Syracuse, New York in 1995. His debut album Stoney from 2016 featured the top 10, diamond-certified song “Congratulations.” His next album, 2017’s Beerbongs & Bentleys, spawned the #1 hits “Rockstar” and “Psycho” as well as the # hit “Better Now.” In 2019, he released Hollywood’s Bleeding. The first two singles, “Wow.” and “Goodbyes” reached #2 and #3 respectively; the third single, “Circles,” gave him his fourth #1 song. It was his first chart-topper where he wasn’t accompanied by another artist.

“Circles” set a record for most weeks in the top 10 (39) before being surpassed by the Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights.” It logged 61 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. It became the most-played radio song of 2020 overall as well as on adult contemporary radio. WK The song was also nominated for Grammys for Record and Song of the Year.

Songfacts.com described the song this way: “Though the relationship seems to bring only sorrow, Post and his lover are unable to split. But continuing to stay together on their carousel only increases the tension between them.” SF

Billboard magazine described the song as “backed by sunny, acoustic guitars, swirling percussion, and infectious melodies.” WK R Dub, the director of programming at Z90.3, called it “an absolutely addicting, fun, emotional, and…non-fatiguing hook, combined with relatable lyrics.” WK
