About the Song:

Shaboozey was born Collins Obinna Chibueze in Virginia on May 9, 1995. The singer/songwriter, rapper, and producer got his stage name from people mispronouncing his last name. He released 18 singles and two albums from 2014 to 2024 before charting for the first time with “A Bar Song (Tipsy).” Earlier that year he gained attention by guesting with Beyoncé on two tracks from her Cowboy Carter album. He explained that someone from her camp had heard “A Bar Song” and decided to bring him in. SF Shaboozey knocked her song “Texas Hold ‘Em” from the top of the country charts, making for the first time in that chart’s history that two consecutive black artists hit #1.

Like Lil Nas X in 2019 with “Old Town Road,” Shaboozey broke through as a black artist with a rap-meets-country song that was embraced as a huge pop crossover hit. Both songs spent 19 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100, tied for the biggest #1’s in the history of the chart. While “Old Town Road” was controversially bumped from the country chart by Billboard after one week, “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” spent 20 weeks atop the country chart. It also became the biggest #1 in that country’s history. The sog has also reached #1 in Australia, Belgium, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden.

Shaboozey said he “found country to be the thing that resonated with me in a really strong way…Me being from Virginia, me loving the style and the way of life and the things they talked about…I found country music could teach people that the little things in life are where the value is” BB He also says, “I love hip-hop; I’m part of their community, too.” BB In fact, “A Bar Song” interpolate’s J-Kwon’s song “Tipsy,” a #2 “hip-hop party anthem” on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B charts in 2004.

Lyrically, the song is sung from the perspective of a narrator who takes out his frustrations with his job by drinking at a dive bar. Songfacts.com says the song “ditches the work blues for whiskey shots and good times. Forget the 9-to-5 grind, the chorus explodes with Friday-night energy as the Nigerian-American rapper celebrates with his friends. There’s a party downtown and everyone’s already ‘tipsy.’ This carefree vibe is pure weekend warrior spirit, with Shaboozey admitting to aboozy wake-up call but no regrets. It’s all about living for the moment, hangover or not.” SF
