In April 2011, I published my first Dave’s Music Database book – The Top 100 Songs of the Rock Era, 1954-1999. In celebration of the 10th anniversary, I am prepping a new edition of the book. In addition to integrating more lists, this edition reflects the effect of streaming and online video on even the pre-digital era. Newer sales data and more charts have been incorporated. Awards given to songs have been updated. 17 new songs make appearances on the list. You can see both the new list and the original list below. Click on song titles to access their DMDB pages.

In Concert: The Rolling Stones

Review:

Seeing the Rolling Stones in concert was a mistake. I made the mistake of not bringing my son, thinking a 12-year-old couldn’t care less about a band only on his radar because of Maroon 5’s “Moves Like Jagger.” I made the mistake of joking that these septuagenarians (except for young pup Ronnie Wood – all of 68) would have difficulty commanding a stage, given the interference of their walkers, canes, and wheelchairs. I made the mistake of dismissing Mick Jagger’s a reputation as possibly rock music’s greatest frontman ever. Finally, I made the mistake of thinking it would be a good idea to go to any other concert again after this one.

I’ve seen my fair share of rock legends on stage – Allman Brothers, Pat Benatar, David Bowie, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Journey, John Mellencamp, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, Styx, Roger Waters, and Yes all spring to mind. However, none came close to matching the stage presence of Mick Jagger. The man didn’t just command a stage, but an arena with his exhaustive prancing and ability to get a crowd revved up. This was not a fat cat millionaire just phoning it in.

Aside from Jagger, there were a lifetime of memorable musical moments. How does one not melt when Keith Richards launches into the arguably most famous guitar riff off all time with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction”? Who wouldn’t be moved by the choir at the beginning of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want”? How about the chops of the female singer on “Gimme Shelter” or the bass solo during “Miss You”? Hell, the final curtain call with just Jagger, Richards, Woods, and Charlie Watts bowing to their audience was tear-worthy.

So I offer my apologies to my son for not making this his first show. I apologize to the Stones for ever dismissing them as past their prime. I apologize to every other performer I’ll ever see when I say, “Well, they were good, but they weren’t the Rolling Stones.”

The Rolling Stones Hit #1 for the First Time: July 18, 1964

The Rolling Stones are now revered as one of the best rock bands in history. They rate in the top 10 acts of all time according to Dave’s Music Database. They are a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

Every band has to start somewhere, though. For the Stones, their first chart hit came in the U.K. in 1963 with “Come On” (#21). “I Wanna Be Your Man” (#12) and “Not Fade Away” (3) followed. Their fourth time out, however, the Stones went all the way to the top with a cover of “It’s All Over Now”.



The song was written by Bobby and Shirley Womack. The Valentinos, which featured Bobby, charted with their version of the song in the U.S. a week before the Stones’ version debuted on the British charts. The Stones heard the song in June 1964 when they were interviewed by New York radio DJ Murray the K. The Stones recorded it nine days later at Chicago’s Chess Studios. Womack wasn’t excited about the idea – until he got his first royalty check six months later.

“Over Now” started a string of five consecutive #1 songs for the Stones. They would land eight songs atop the British charts overall.

Stateside “Over Now” was the third chart hit for the Stones following “Not Fade Away” (#48) and “Tell Me (You’re Coming Back)” (#24). The group wouldn’t hit #1 in the U.S. until “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction)” in 1965, but would take eight songs to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 as well.

The video for the song was taken from the T.A.M.I. Show, a television broadcast featuring many acts, including James Brown, Chuck Berry, and the Beach Boys. The shows were taped on October 28-29, 1964 and aired on television December 29, 1964.
