Sinéad O’Connor: Top 50 Songs

Sinéad O’Connor

Top 50 Songs

Alternative-rock singer born Sinéad Marie Bernadette O’Connor on 12/8/1966 in Glenageary, County Dublin, Ireland. She was also known by the names Magda Davitt and Shuhada Sadaqat. She died 7/26/2023.

While she is generally viewed in the United States as a one-hit wonder for her #1 iconic 1990 smash “Nothing Compares 2 U” and its chart-topping, multi-platinum parent album I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got, she had other chart entries in her native Ireland, the UK, Australia, and other parts of the world. She released ten studio albums from 1987 to 2014. She was working on a new album at the time of her death.

She led a troubled life, being sent to an asylum for eighteen months at the age of 15 for shoplifting and truancy. She said her mother psychologically and physically abused her. She died in a car accident when Sinéad was 18. She struggled with mental illness including bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. She was married and divorced four times and had four children. She attempted suicide in 1999 on her 33rd birthday. In 2022, her 17-year-old son Shane committed suicide.

She often generated controversy, most notably during a 1992 appearance on Saturday Night Live in which she tore up a picture of the Pope in protest against sexual abuse of children in the Catholic Church. In her 2021 memoir Rememberings, she said that “A lot of people say or think that tearing up the pope’s photo derailed my career. That’s not how I feel about it…I feel that having a number-one record derailed my career and my tearing the photo put me back on the right track.” PP

In the late ‘90s, she was ordained as a priest by the Irish Orthodox Catholic and Apostolic Church. In 2013, she berated Miley Cyrus for her “Wrecking Ball” video (in which she appeared nude) that she was sending the message that it was cool to be prostituted. In 2018, she converted to Islam and called non-Muslims “disgusting.”

About the Song:

Olivia Rodrigo, born 2003, got her start as a teen star via Disney television shows Bizaardvark and High School Musical: The Series. She signed a record deal with Geffen Records in 2020 and released her debut album, Sour, the next year. It produced the #1 hits “Drivers License” and “Good 4 U” as well as top-10 hits “Déjà Vu” and “Traitor.” It was also nominated for a Grammy for Album of the Year. She landed Grammy nominations for the Big Four: Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Record of the Year for “Drivers License,” and Best New Artist, winning the latter.

Despite the huge expectations established with such a successful debut, Rodrigo didn’t disappoint with her next outing. 2023 saw the release of her sophomore album, Guts. Once again she landed Grammy nominations for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year – the latter two for “Vampire.”

“Vampire” was the first single from Guts, leaping out of the gates with a debut atop the Billboard Hot 100. Songfacts.com described it as “a haunting piano-backed lament that delves into the depths of a toxic relationship.” SF Rodrigo used vampire imagery to describe an ex-lover who “thrives on sucking the life force out of others.” SF Laura Snapes of The Guardian said it “bears Rodrigo’s wounds in a reminder of what’s at stake for young women.” WK

The song was based on two relationships she had with men in their mid-20s while she was in her late teens. They “manipulated her, fed her lies, and leeched off her fame.” SF Rodrigo told Billboard magazine she felt like it was her “version of a rock opera.” WK She said, “it’s kind of an angry song, and I think I have a lot of trouble expressing feelings like anger and regret…I go to songwriting to get those feelings out that aren’t super comfortable to express in everyday life. So it was a very therapeutic experience, writing this song.” SF

Billie Eilish “What Was I Made For?” released

What Was I Made For?

Billie Eilish

Writer(s): Billie Eilish O'Connell, Finneas O'Connell (see lyrics here)

Released: July 13, 2023

First Charted: July 29, 2023

Peak: 14 BB, 30 AC, 5 A40, 11 UK, 13 CN, 13 AU, 18 DF (Click for codes to charts.)

Sales (in millions): 1.0 US, 0.6 UK, 2.70 world (includes US + UK)

Airplay/Streaming (in millions): -- radio, 231.10 video, 1069.35 streaming

Awards:

Click on award for more details.

About the Song:

Entering 2023, Billie Eilish already had a resume most artists could never hope to emulate. The singer/songwriter was born in Los Angeles, California, in 2001. Her debut album, 2019’s When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? and its #1 single “Bad Guy” thrust her into the spotlight. She became the first woman to win the “Big Four” at the Grammys – Best New Artist, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Record of the Year.

She released “Everything I Wanted” in late 2019. It was another top-10 hit and won another Grammy for Record of the Year. The following year she wrote “No Time to Die” for the James Bond film of the same name. It won the Oscar for Best Original Song. In 2021, she released her second album, Happier Than Ever. It produced three top-10 hits in the United States and topped the charts in 25 countries.

This brings us to 2023 when Eilish contributed “What Was I Made For?” to the soundtrack for Barbie. Released in July, the movie made more than a billion dollars, putting it in the top 20 of all time. Her song reached the top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and garnered her another pair of Grammy nominations for Record and Song of the Year, winning the latter.

Greta Gerwig, the movie’s director, showed Eilish a rough cut of the film. Billie and her brother then wrote “What Was I Made For?” The focus was on the movie’s concept of Barbie being cast out of her utopian existence and into the real world and suffering an existential crisis. SF Eilish said, “I was purely inspired by this movie and this character and the way I thought she would feel, and wrote about that.” WK
