About the Song:

The Flaming Lips formed in 1983 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. The only member through all of incarnations has been Wayne Coyne, who sings as well as plays guitar, bass, and keyboards. The group recorded albums and EPs with the indie label Restless before signing to Warner Brothers and releasing their first major label record in 1992. They experienced some mainstream success with 1993’s “She Don’t Use Jelly” and gained critical acclaim with 1999’s The Soft Bulletin.

In 2002, the band achieved their best-selling album with Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots which reached gold status in the United States. “Do You Realize?,” the first of four singles from the album, is “widely considered to be one of the group’s most accessible and popular songs.” WK In 2009, it was named the official rock song of Oklahoma. SF

Author Toby Creswell describes the song as, “a gorgeously baroque and gentle song about the inevitability of death.” TC It was partly inspired by the death of a friend of the band. SF It has become what Songfacts.com called “a modern spiritual anthem.” SF

In 2013, Coyne told NME that the song is his proudest moment. SF He says, “How lucky am I? I can say that I created that song, but I wouldn’t have thought it had this other worldiness. I run into people every tie we play who’ve used it at funerals, weddings, or when their kids are born.” SF
