Top 100 Country Albums of All Time

The Top 100 Albums

This was originally posted as a top 20 list on Facebook and then expanded for the DMDB blog. 38 lists (sources at bottom of page) focused on country albums were aggregated to create this list. Albums making 3 or more of those lists were ranked by their overall status in Dave’s Music Database. Also factored in were those which topped the country album chart or won Country Album of the Year awards from the Academy of Country Music, American Music Awards, Billboard, Country Music Association, Dave’s Music Database, and the Grammys.

There is a lot of cross-polination between country, folk, and Americana. I’ve created three separate lists for these genres and allowed an album to only show up on one of the three lists. Check out those and other best-of-genre/category lists here.

Producer Mutt Lange was born Robert John Lange on November 11, 1948, in Mufulira, Zambia. His father was a mining engineer from South Africa and his mother was from a prosperous family in Germany. He was nicknamed “Mutt” at an early age. He grew up a fan of country music, particularly Slim Whitman. He and future-wife Stevie Vann played together in the band Hocus during the ‘70s, but the marriage dissolved by decade’s end.

In the late ’70, he wrote and sang for his own band Supercharge, including the 1979 song Do You Believe in Love? which became a hit for Huey Lewis & the News in 1982. He also did his first production work for the Boomtown Rats, most notably on their 1978 #1 UK hit Rat Trap.

During the ‘70s and ‘80s, he did production work for some of the biggest albums in rock history, including AC/DC’s Highway to Hell (1979) and Back in Black (1980), Foreigner’s 4 (1981), and Def Leppard’s Pyromania (1983) and Hysteria (1987). He was also a co-writer on major singles including Def Leppard’s Photograph (1983) and Rock of Ages (1983), Loverboy’s Lovin’ Every Minute of It (1985), and Billy Ocean’s Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car (1988).

He also co-wrote one of the biggest hits of the ‘90s, Bryan Adams’ Everything I Do (I Do It for You) and produced his Waking Up the Neighbours album. He met and married Shania Twain in 1993, producing her next three smash albums.

He has also produced or written songs for the Backstreet Boys, Celine Dion, Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, Loverboy, Muse, Nickelback, Britney Spears, Tina Turner, and Dionne Warwick.

Country singer Shania Twain was born Eileen Regina Edwards on August 28, 1965, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. Her self-titled debut album in 1993 went nowhere, peaking at #67 on the country chart and not even making the pop chart.

However, her sophomore album, 1995’s The Woman in Me, sold 20 million copies worldwide, making it one of the top 100 albums of all time. Her next album, 1997’s Come on Over, sold twice that number, putting it in the top ten of all time. When her next album, 2002’s Up!, was certified for eleven million, it made her the only female artist in history to have three consecutive albums certified diamond by the Recording Industry Assocation of America (RIAA).

It would be fifteen years before she released another album, 2017’s Now. It was her fifth #1 country album. During her hiatus, she dealt with Lyme disease and dysphonia as well as a 2010 divorce with Mutt Lange, who had produced her trio of ten-million-selling albums. 2023 marked the release of her sixth studio release, Queen of Me.

The Top 100+ Albums

You’d think it would be simple to generate this list; you just count up how many sales each album has and the one with the most is the best-seller and so on, right? Well…

There’s a couple problems. First, on a global scale, there just isn’t any solid means in place for tracking albums. Second, even those official sales measurers (such as the RIAA in the United States) favor more recent albums because of improvements in tracking over the years and simple population growth. Third, albums that preceded official tracking measures don’t even typically show up on all-time best-selling lists.

As a result, the DMDB has compiled what lists it can find to try to generate a worldwide bestsellers list. Click here for a complete list of those sources. In the event of ties, the oldest album is listed first. Click on an album to go to its DMDB page.

Note: One should certainly regard this list with at least some skepticism. Remember, these aren’t official numbers, just estimates. Also, to boost an album’s reputation, even official websites or record companies may inflate numbers. (Iron Butterfly has sold 30 million copies worldwide of In-A-Gada-Da-Vida? Really?) However, it is my opinion that these estimates come much closer to reflecting all-times sales than the official records reflect.

Note: when albums sold the same amount, they are listed by overall DMDB points. Also, this list is slightly over 100 albums to include all those which sold 20 million or more.

Best-Selling Albums: From Vinyl Records to Digital Downloads

This book ranks the top albums of each decade from the 1950s through the 2010s, based on certifications from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The lists for the 1960s through the 2000s are top 20 lists, the 1950s is a top-10 ranking, and the half-decade of 2010-2015 is just a top-5 ranking.

While the RIAA offers official certifications for the United States, they don’t accurately capture real sales worldwide. Unfortunately, there isn’t any official source that certifies worldwide albums sales. As such, Dave’s Music Database offers its list of “The World’s All-Time Best-Selling Albums.” This list compiles sales estimates from multiple sources. While that makes these figures less accurate than certified sales records, it offers a closer picture of the actual best-selling albums.
