The Top 50 Punk Songs of All Time

Punk Rock:

Top 50 Songs

Punk rock grew out of the garage rock of the ‘60s and the rejection of more commercialized, mainstream rock in the ‘70s. Its creators often embraced a rebellious, confrontational, and anti-establishment ethos which resonated with their disenfranchised listeners. While the movement was short-lasting and reached a limited audience, its influence extended into the alternative rock of the ‘80s and ‘90s, most clearly in the grunge movement. This list was created by aggregating 29 lists (sources listed below).

The Top 250 New Wave/College Rock Songs

New Wave/College Rock:

Top 250 Songs

This is really two lists in one. I attempted making one list devoted to new wave and another to college rock, but they overlapped enough that it made more sense to combine them. New wave was a synth-driven musical genre in the 1980s helmed by bands like New Order, Depeche Mode, and the Cure. College radio stations helped give an audience to that music as well as more guitar-focused bands like U2 and R.E.M. While often gathered under the banner of “alternative rock,” a significant number of bands which started on the fringe had, by decade’s end become the mainstream.

More than 50 lists focused on one genre or the other (or both) were aggregated to create this list. I opted to stretch the list to 250 songs to encompass all the songs that would rank in the top 100 in one list or the other. Peaks on the two lists, if they were separated out, are indicated with CR (college rock) and NW (new wave).

Rolling Stone: Top 100 Albums of All Time

Rolling Stone:

The Top 100 Albums

This is not an official Rolling Stone magazine list; rather it is an aggregate of nine major lists published by the magazine. (See the specific links at bottom of page). The best resource for reading more about these albums is Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time book, published in 2005 by Wenner Media, LLC. The list differs slightly from the original 2003, which was updated again in 2012 and 2020. It underwent very slight modifications in 2023. You can click on an album title to go to a DMDB page for more about that album.

Also, check out Rolling Stone’s annual picks for album of the year. They have made such picks since 1978. However, the DMDB has expanded the list back to 1965 based on the lists aggregated here.

Check out other publications and organizations’ best-of album lists here.

Marc Fagel/Jittery White Guy Music: Top 1000+ Songs

Marc Fagel (Jittery White Guy Music):

Top 1000 Songs

Inspired by Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time,” Marc Fagel created his own list in September 2021, which ballooned to a top 1000 list by July 2023. Fagel describes himself as a “music-obsessed, retired San Francisco lawyer, and author of the rock & roll memoir Jittery White Guy Music.”
