The Top 25 Albums

While traditional pop and vocal jazz aren’t quite the same thing, they share a lot of commonalities. Traditional pop is considered a genre of music that generally pre-dates rock and roll in the 1950s and generally consists of artists performing standards from the American songbook. Crooners such as Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, and Perry Como are popular singers of the genre. Musically, the singers were frequently backed by swing bands.

Vocal jazz is a sub-genre of jazz in which a singer’s voice is used as an instrument, which includes techniques such as vocal improvisations and scatting in which the singer imitates the instruments. It emerged out of the New Orleans jazz tradition which was built on the field hollers and work songs of African-American slaves. Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Sarah Vaughan are some of the genre’s most notable performers. Like traditional pop, it often leans on standards.

Americana: Top 100 All-Time Albums

Americana:

The Top 100 Albums

Americana has become a catch-all phrase for roots-oriented music that taps primarily into folk and country. It has, however, become a genre that also builds off the folk-rock movement of the ‘60s, the country rock movement of the ‘70s, and the alt-country movement of the ‘90s.

The DMDB aggregated more than 30 lists and then took those albums from 3 or more lists and ranked them according to overall DMDB points. It should be noted that I have created separate lists for country and folk/folk-rock albums, but some of those titles also appear here. Check out other best-of-genre/category lists here.

Consequence of Sound:

The 100 Greatest Albums of All Time

The first version of this list was published in 2010. At the time, the website described it as “a definitive ranking voted and debated by our editors, staff writers, and contributors.” Then Michael Roffman, the President/Editor-in-Chief, offered up a long essay on the pros and cons of lists pretty much hitting on points which the reader already knows.

In celebration of its 15th anniversary, Consequence of Sound updated the list, noting that only two staff members were part of compiling the 2010 and 2022 versions. The introduction notes, “Tastes have been reshaped, genres have been born and died away...Records that weren’t considered – or even released – the last time we undertook this challenge now have prominent placement.” Unlike the egotism that allowed the 2010 version to be referred to as “definitive,” the introduction to the 2002 acknowledges, “You’re going to disagree about as much as you agree with what we’ve done here. You’re going to wonder how album X didn’t warrant mention, or why album Y is higher than album Z. Or where the heck is artist W?” It concludes saying, “maybe you, dear reader, believe there is a definitive, eternal, unimpeachable ranking of records…Who knows, maybe you’re right. This isn’t that list.”

I have included both lists below. There are 56 albums which appear on both lists. They are noted with asterisks (*).

The Top 100 Albums, 1990-2021

In 1996, Billboard magazine launched its adult alternative chart, which was tracked radio stations focused on playing rock-oriented heritage artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, and John Mellencamp, as well as newer artists like Counting Crows, Dave Matthews Band, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Matchbox 20.

This list reflects albums which charted at least 3 songs on the adult alternative chart or, in the case of pre-1996 releases, albums which likely would have accomplished the feat based on those artists’ accomplishments on the post-1995 charts. More than 150 albums made the criteria. The top 100 have been ranked here, based on their overall status in Dave’s Music Database.

In 1966, K-Tel released its first compilation, 25 Country Hits. Over the next two decades, the company would release more than a hundred compilations, most focused on the pop hits of the day. A 2013 Forbes article called the company “the spotify of the 1970s.”

The company was founded by Philip Kives, a business executive, entrepreneur, and marketing expert from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He was born on February 12, 1929, and died at age 87 on April 27, 2016. In honor of him, the DMDB presents a list of the top 100 songs (see list here) to appear on K-Tel compilations and the top 20 K-Tel compilations. (years covered, year of release):
