ASCAP: Songs of the Year (1914-2024)

ASCAP:

Songs of the Year, 1914-2024

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) formed in 1914. They are a membership association of more than 930,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers. In honor of their 100th birthday, they created a list of their top 100 songs as well as a list of the songs of the year from 1914 to 2013.

This page includes all of the songs on that list as well as awards for Pop Song of the Year. I can’t find an official list of the latter, but have compiled those songs to receive the award from 2005 to 2023.

FYI – ASCAP identifies the songs by the songwriters, not the performers, but I have identified the performer associated with the highest-ranked version of the song even if that version doesn’t correspond with the referenced year.

ASCAP Awards

ASCAP Awards:

1982-2024

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) gives out two lifetime achievement-type awards on an annual basis. Based on the descriptions below, there doesn’t appear to be a real distinction between the awards and, in fact, there are a handful of artists who’ve received both awards.

The Founders Award is, according to their website, their “most prestigious honor and is given to songwriters and composers who have made pioneering contributions to music by inspiring and influencing their fellow music creators.” It was first given in 1984 and last awarded on March 4, 2024.

They also present a Golden Note Award to, as the website says “songwriters, composers, and artists who have achieved extraordinary career milestones.” It was first given in 1982 and last awarded in 2023.

Recipients of either the Founders Award (FA) or Golden Notes Award (GN) are noted below along with the year they received the award. Click on the name of the music maker to see entry in the DMDB Encyclopedia.
