Radio & Records/Mediabase Top 100 Songs

Radio & Records/Mediabase:

Top 100+ Songs (1973-2025)

Radio & Records was an independent trade publication which published a weekly pop songs chart as a competitor to Billboard magazine. It ran from October 3, 1973 to August 4, 2006, when it was taken over by Mediabase, who has continued the chart to present day.

This list is based on song’s most weeks at #1 on that chart. Tie-breakers are broken based on which songs have the most points in Dave’s Music Database. The list includes all songs to top the charts for six weeks or more.

About the Song:

Christina Aguilera and Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine were coaches together on the TV talent show The Voice when they released this duet. The song’s release coincided with a live performance on the show. It isn’t really much of a duet, though. Aguilera doesn’t come in until the bridge after two minutes. SF However, About.com’s Bill Lamb said her guest vocal was “simply icing on the cake” and noted the “real vocal chemistry between Aguiera and Levine. WK

One of the song’s writers, Benny Blanco, also worked on the #1 hit “Tik Tok,” recorded by Ke$ha. The latter song also name-checks the legendary Rolling Stones’ singer with the lyric “We kick ‘em to the curb unless they look like Mick Jagger.” SF The lyrics in “Move Like Jagger” refer to a man trying to impress a female with his Jagger-like dance moves.

Levine said “I’ve been a student at the Jagger School of Interesting Movement for 17 years.” He noted that Jagger’s moves are “carefully calculated but slightly spastic, incredible rhythmic experience…and it’s impossible to re-create. Nobody has moves like Jagger.” SF Levine said the song was almost shelved over his nervousness about how Jagger might react to it. The Stones’ frontman said of the song, “It’s very catchy pop, isn’t it?...Only thing is, it puts a bit of pressure on me when I go out dancing.” SF

The song topped the charts in 18 countries. WK It was the second #1 for Maroon 5 (after “Makes Me Wonder” in 2007) in the U.S. while it was Aguilera’s fifth. WK She became only the fourth female artist to score #1’s in three different decades, the others being Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Britney Spears. WK The song had an interesting run in the UK, peaking at #2 for seven weeks – behind six different songs which debuted at #1. WK

About the Song:

As her follow-up single to the #1 “Just Dance,” Lady Gaga had her work cut out for her with “Poker Face.” With lyrics about gambling and her own experiences with bisexuality, she wasn’t exactly going for the most radio-friendly theme either. She told Fashionista 101 that the song was about “playing with guys as if she was a poker player.” SF As she said to an audience at an April 11, 2009, performance in Palm Springs, California, the song was about being “with a man but fantasizing about a woman, hence the man in the song needs to read her ‘Poker Face’ to understand what is going through her mind.” WK

No worries, though – the song not only followed “Just Dance” to the top of the U.S. charts, but peaked at #1 in sixteen other countries as well. WK It made Gaga the first artist to top the U.S. charts with her first two entries since Christina Aguilera did it nearly a decade earlier WK with “Genie in a Bottle” and “What a Girl Wants.” It became “the song with which she placed her stamp on the waning months of the decade.” LR

Producer RedOne, with whom Gaga wrote “Poker Face” and “Just Dance,” told Billboard magazine how the two clicked immediately. “We’re not overthinking. We just do what we feel right.. Before you know it the song is pretty much done…We wrote ‘Just Dance’ in one hour. Done. ‘Poker Face’? One hour. It just happened. Magic.” SF

Both songs sold 4 million downloads in the U.S., making her the first artist in digital history to do so. WK The songs have gone on to sell six million each. Another 900,000 downloads in the U.K. also made “Face” the most downloaded song in Britain since they introduced the download chart in 2004. WK

About the Song:

“Lady Marmalade,” written by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan, was first recorded in 1974 by the Eleventh Hour, a studio group fronted by Kenny. The song was inspired by New Orleans’ prositutes in the red-light district of the French Quarter. SF Producer Allen Toussaint heard the track and wanted LaBelle – comprised of Patti LaBelle, Noan Hendryx, and Sarah Dash – to record it. The Philadelphia trio had been around more than a decade and landed five top-40 hits on the R&B chart, but they hadn’t charted since 1966. Personnel and label changes led them to Epic in 1974 where their recording of “Lady Marmalade” became “an outrageous party anthem” SF and an early favorite of the disco era. That’s not surprising. “It’s pure fatback funk, with a huge bass and piano part playing that ae-inspiring backing lick.” TB

The song ruffled the feathers of some who saw it as glamorizing prostitution. SF LaBelle ooffered “coy invitations of ‘Voluez-vous coucer avec moi ce soir?’ in what sounded like some sort of sexual voodoo chant in the immortal verse ‘Itchi gitchi yay a da da da / Itchi gitchi ya ya here / Mocha-chocal-lata ya ya / Creole Lady Marmalade!” TB

The song reached the top in 1975, knocking Frankie Valli’s “My Eyes Adored You” from the pinnacle. It marked only the third time in history that a songwriting team succeeded themselves at #1. FB LaBelle didn’t make it back to the top-40 on the pop chart, but as a solo artist Patti LaBelle resurfaced in the mid-‘80s with the top-20 hit “New Attitude” and the #1 duet with Michael McDonald, “On My Own.”

Meanwhile, the song experienced several revivals. In 1987, Italian pop star Sabrina recorded the song and had some minor success in Belgium and France. In 1998, the girl group All Saints took their version to #1 in the UK. Three years later, Christina Aguilera, Lil’ Kim, Mya, and Pink recorded “their naughtier version” AMG with the song’s setting changed from New Orleans to the Paris nightclub Moulin Rouge. WK

The song was used in director Baz Luhrmann’s modern-day musical Moulin Rouge! about a brothel in Paris at the turn of the century. A number of big name artists were tapped to do cover songs for the soundtrack, but the version of “Lady Marmalade” had the most superpower behind it. When it topped the charts in June 2001, it marked the ninth time in chart history for two versions of a song to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. FB It became the only song to top the UK and U.S. charts twice. SF It also gave Crewe and Nolan the distinction of the longest span of #1 hits, dating back more than 38 years to “Big Girls Don’t Cry” by the Four Seasons. FB
