As it says on their website, IFPI (the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) “is the voice of the recording industry worldwide. [They] represent the interests of 1,300 record companies across the globe.” They put out annual reports on the state of the music industry. Since 2007, that report has included lists of the top acts, albums, and singles each year.
