In Concert: Tori Amos

Tori Amos

Music Hall in Kansas City
May 31, 2022

Opening Act:

Companion

Review:

I’ve been a Tori Amos fan since her debut album, 1992’s Little Earthquakes but this was my first time seeing her live. I have a great respect for artists who have produced a large enough catalog to allow them to pretty much do what they want in concert instead of sticking to a must-play-these-hits-every-time setlist. Amos has definitely reached that point in her career.

I’m also impressed when artists dip into every phase of their careers instead of overdosing on the hits or the current release. Once again, Amos accomplished this task.

Having said that, I admit the perfect Tori Amos concert (for me) would have pulled almost exclusively from her first two albums and B-sides from that era. She did play “Girl” and “Precious Things” from Little Earthquakes, but none of the singles from that album (“Silent All These Years,” “Crucify,” “Winter,” “China,” and “Me and a Gun”). I’d have also loved to see her version of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” a B-side for “Crucify.”

Similarly, she barely touched sophomore album Under the Pink. She did play arguably her best-known song, “Cornflake Girl,” from that album, but ignored the other singles (“God,” “Pretty Good Year,” “Past the Mission”). She did play “Honey,” a B-side from “Pretty Good Year.”

So was it a good concert? Sure. I’m glad I went. I just wish there would have been a few moments where I was ecstatic about her playing one of my favorites.

Fleetwood Mac: In Concert

Fleetwood Mac

Sprint Center
Kansas City, MO
October 19, 2018

l to r: John McVie, Christine McVie, Stevie Nicks, Neil Finn, Mick Fleetwood, Mike Campbell; image from ultimateclassicrock.com

Review:

This was close to, but not quite, the familiar Fleetwood Mac lineup. True to their history, the band is surrounded by drama as they embark on this tour, having ousted Lindsey Buckingham (who is now suing them) and replacing him with Neil Finn (best known from Crowded House and Split Enz) and Mike Campbell (of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers). They proved capable and welcome additions to the band, resulting in some highlights which wouldn’t have occurred if Buckingham were still part of the mix. Not only did the band dip into pre-Buckingham/Nicks era songs like “Oh Well” and “Black Magic Woman,” but they tackled representations of Finn (“Don’t Dream It’s Over,” “I Got You”) and Campbell (Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’”).

Most of the show relied on fan favorites from their biggest albums with five songs from Fleetwood Mac (1975), seven songs from Rumours (1977), and three from Tango in the Night (1987). Occasionally McVie would introduce one of their “old” songs which made me snicker, considering the most recent song they played the entire night was “All Over Again” from 1995’s Time.

That song was a rare duo from Christine and Stevie on a non-hit from a largely forgotten album. That was a highlight as was the extended drum solo and some amusing, albeit sometimes indecipherable, verbal spouts from Mick Fleetwood during “World Turning.” “Click here to see other concerts I’ve attended.

In Concert: Michael Franti & Spearhead

Michael Franti & Spearhead

Grinders at Crossroads; Kansas City, MO
July 11, 2017

Opening Act:

Kawehi

Review:

Wow. Wow. Wow. I posted earlier this week about the dilemma of whether to see Robert Cray or Michael Franti tonight. I chose the latter and, boy, did I choose right.

I've seen maybe 40-50 shows in my life - more than some people, a lot less than others. This, however, was a transformative experience. I've never seen a performer more dedicated to making a connection with the audience. He had maybe an 8YO kid up on stage with him about 2 songs in singing and dancing. I figured it would be the highlight of the show. Boy, was I wrong. There was much more to come.

He told plenty of stories which evoked both tears and laughter. He wandered out into the audience for about a six-song set and then came back out again several more times during other songs.

He often asked the crowd to raise their hands in the air, jump up and down, hug someone, or introduce yourself to a stranger. At one point he pulled nearly a dozen kids on stage to sing and dance with him.

Oh, and this was all done as he sang songs with a very distinct "let's all love one another and get along" hippie vibe.

After the show, as the crew packed up the stage, Franti hung around talking to fans and taking selfies. When I left he was still at it and I imagine he doesn't leave until anyone who wants to hug him, take a picture, or share a story gets their chance.

Sorry all other performers I'll see in the future. Michael Franti has set a new bar which none of you may ever reach.

Concert: Elvis Costello

image from elviscostello.com

Venue: Yardley Hall, Johnson County Community College – Overland Park, KS

Opening Act: Larkin Poe

I missed Elvis Costello a year before and was sure I’d blown my one chance to see him. Lo and behold, he was back in 2016 and I wasn’t going to miss him this time around. With a wide catalog to work from, I was pleased to see the varied approaches he used to play the songs – a set on guitar, a set on piano, etc. The highlight of the show was “Alison,” and not just because it is arguably his most celebrated song. Armed with just a guitar and no mike, Costello wondered out into the audience to perform the song, even sitting down in the seats by a fan at one point.

Best concert I’ve ever seen in terms of theatrics. This was on the top of my concert bucket list since I first heard about the Pink Floyd The Wall concerts in 1980-81 which only hit a handful of cities because the show was too costly and complicated. Here’s a timeline of when each of the above songs was originally released. It’s interesting that the entire decade of the ‘80s was neglected. He also avoided perhaps his three best-known covers: “After Midnight,” “I Shot the Sheriff,” and “Knocking on Heaven’s Door.”

  • 1939: Judy Garland in the movie The Wizard of Oz: “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Not featured on any Clapton albums.
  • 1967: Cream’s album Disraeli Gears: “Sunshine of Your Love”
  • 1969: Cream’s album Goodbye: “Badge”
  • 1970: Derek and the Dominoes’ album Layla…and Other Assorted Love Songs: “Key to the Highway,” “Bell Bottom Blues,” “Layla”
  • 1972: Billy Preston’s “Will It Go Round in Circles,” a #1 single from Preston’s album Music Is My Life. Not featured on any Clapton albums.
  • 1977: Slow Hand: “Cocaine,” “Wonderful Tonight”
  • 1992: Rush Soundtrack: “Tears in Heaven”
  • 1994: From the Cradle: “Hoochie Coochie Man,” “Five Long Years”
  • 1996: Phenomenon Soundtrack: “Change the World”
  • 1998: Pilgrim: “My Father’s Eyes,” “River of Tears,” “Going Down Slow,” “She’s Gone”
  • 2001: Reptile: “Reptile,” “Got You on My Mind,” “I Want a Little Girl”

Billy Preston is most noted as the only artist to share billing with the Beatles on one of their songs (“Get Back”). Also a successful solo artist; at his peak in the early ‘70s. He was playing keyboards for gospel diva Mahalia Jackson by the age of 10. Andy Fairweather-Low has toured and recorded with Eric Clapton since 1992. He has also worked with George Harrison, Roger Waters, Stevie Nicks, and Kate Bush, among others. In the late ‘60s, Andy was the lead singer of British group Amen Corner. Nathan East has worked with Clapton since 1986. He has also worked with Barry White, Dionne Warwick, Johnny Mathis, Lionel Richie, Kenny Rogers, and Kenny Loggins. He also has been a member of the jazz group Fourplay in the ‘90s. Steve Gadd has worked with Clapton since 1998. Gadd also has worked as a jazz drummer with Dizzy Gillespie, Chick Corea, Bob James, Grover Washington Jr., and David Sanborn. All of the above, including opening act Doyle Bramhall II, were involved in the recording of the Reptile album. Only Dave Sancious, Bruce Springsteen’s keyboardist on his first three albums, was added for the tour. He has also worked as a solo artist, as well as a keyboardist for Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Bryan Ferry.
