Pulitzer Prize

Pulitzer Prize:

Special Awards and Citations for Musicians

The Pulitzer is an award best known for honoring excellence in journalism, but they also award excellence in the arts. Just over a dozen musicians have been honored through the years with special awards. While this page has been updated through 2026, the most recent recipient is Aretha Franklin in 2019.

The Top 100 Singers of All Time

Singers:

Top 100

This list has been updated several times, most recently in 2026 after the Consequence.net ranking of the top 100 vocalists of all time. More than 70 lists – some of which focus on singers and some of which focus on greatest frontmen and women – have been aggregated to create this list.

Lists which purport to be “the best of all time” are usually flawed in several ways. First of all, they tend to focus on the rock era, oblivious that there was music before the 1950s. Second, they not only lean on that era, but tend to favor rock and roll artists. Third, those artists are overwhelmingly from English-speaking countries, namely the United States and the United Kingdom. While the third circumstance is still overwhelmingly obvious on this list, I have done my best to pull lists to represent different genres and eras as much as possible. It still isn’t perfect, but it does offer more diversity and representation than you’ll typically find on a best-of list.

Apollo Theater Walk of Fame

Apollo Theater Walk of Fame:

2006-2024

The famed Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York, dates back to the mid-19th century when Civil War General Edward Ferrero founded Apollo Hall as a dance hall and ballroom. In 1872, his lease expired and the building was converted to a theater. It closed shortly before the turn of the century, but the Apollo Theater resurfaced around 1913 in a new building at 253 West 125th Street. It declined again in the 1960s and ‘70s, but was revived in 1983. It gained fame over the years for featuring almost exclusively African-American performers.

Somewhere in the mid-2000s, the Apollo launched its own Walk of Fame (also called the Legends Hall of Fame). The first group looks to have been inducted in 2006 although other sources say the Walk of Fame wasn’t established until 2010. Even the official Apollo Theater website offers no details about the Walk of Fame so the list of inductees below has been compiled from various sources. The most recent inductee appears to be Clive Davis on June 6, 2025.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees Ranked

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Inductees Ranked:

1986-2024

With every year’s announcement of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, there are two guarantees – there will be a slew of complaints about who hasn’t been inducted and who has been inducted who shouldn’t have been. This challenged me to come up with an objective rating of the inductees to determine just who has earned it most and who hasn’t. These rankings consolidate multiple best-artists-of-all-time lists along with sales figures, chart statistics, and other awards and honors. In the event of ties, earliest inductees are listed first. Here are the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees ranked.

R&B #1 Songs: 1942-2023

R&B:

#1 Songs (1942-2023)

Billboard magazine launched its first country chart on October 24, 1942. It has undergone different name changes over the years. The magazine discontinued the chart from 11/30/1963 to 1/30/1965. This list has been supplemented during that time with those songs which topped the R&B charts on the Cash Box R&B chart.

The Whitburn book cited at the bottom of this page also notes songs which topped the R&B airplay chart from 1996 to 1998. In addition, the Wikipedia pages show songs which topped the R&B/hip-hop songs airplay chart from 2013 onward. Those #1s have also been noted in the list below.

Check other lists based on charts, sales, and airplay here.

First week at #1: Artist “Title” (# of weeks at #1). Songs which topped the R&B airplay chart are noted with an asterisk (*). In some cases, a song topped both charts. The date represents whichever chart the song topped first and the #1 of weeks at #1 is for whichever chart the song spent the longest on.
