Progressive-rock group Genesis formed in 1966. Original frontman Peter Gabriel went solo in 1975 and was replaced on vocals by the band’s drummer Phil Collins, who stayed with the group until 1992, maintaining a simultaneous solo career from 1981 on. Guitarist/bassist Mike Rutherford formed the side project Mike + the Mechanics in 1985 and keyboardist Tony Banks released solo material along the way. This list focuses on the material they created within and outside of Genesis.

About the Song:

“There are few songs as blindly fascinating and striking as this” SY “compelling look at the pitfalls of fame” PD and “obsessive fandom.” TB “Rapper Eminem cemented his artistic standing” AB’00 with this “fictional…but frighteningly real” PD story of a deranged fan who sends “a series of unhinged letters.” RS’09

This “creepy hit… encapsulated the dramatic flair that made Eminem so impossible to ignore in 2000.” RS’09 “Even now…[it is] funnier and more shocking than 99 percent of mainstream hip-hop.” MX It is a “raw, beautiful…tragedy without melodrama.” SY It was “instantly fascinating…on first listen [in] how it could take such a cute, pedestrian verse to symbolize an obsessive fan’s descent into madness and self-destruction [and] how Eminem’s rap could sound so realistic, like he’s a friend telling you this story.” SY

Malcolm McLaren’s 1984 song “Fans” appears to be the basis of “Stan” in both its structure and story, complete with an opera aria excerpt along with samples from “Thank You,” a song by “hippy-dippy English songbird” TB Dido which became a hit in its own right. SF Em also references his own work when Stan says, “I drank a fifth of vodka, dare me to drive?,” a line from “My Name Is.” Stan also references an untrue rumor that Phil Collins’ “In the Air Tonight” was written by Collins when he witnessed a man stand by and do nothing while someone drowned. The legend says Collins invited the man to one of his concerts and sang it to him. SF

Eminem had to deal with charges of being anti-gay because in one of Stan’s letters, he writes about wanting to be with Eminem, who replies that it makes him not want to meet Stan. In response, Eminem enlisted the openly gay Elton John to play piano and sing Dido’s part at the 2001 Grammys. SF

A Brief History:

Phil Collins made his name as the drummer of Genesis, later becoming the band’s lead singer after Peter Gabriel’s departure in 1975. In 1981, he released his first solo album. Through the ‘80s and ‘90s, he continued to work with Genesis and release solo albums. The Hits compilation he released in 1998 covers six of those studio albums, indicated below.

Face Value (1981):

Face Value was only represented by one song on the Hits set although four songs from the album charted, including the U.S. top-20 hit “I Missed Again.”

Like Face Value, this album was only represented with one song despite eight chart hits, most notably “I Don’t Care Anymore,” a top-40 hit which also hit #3 on the album rock chart.

Collins’ heydays were behind him as this album failed to match the success of his last two albums, 1985’s No Jacket Required and 1989’s …But Seriously. Both albums hit #1 and produced four top-ten hits each in the United States. Both Sides, however, failed to send any songs into the top 20 and the album didn’t even make the top 10. The album did produce two top-40 hits, “Both Sides of the Story” and “Everyday,” the latter which wasn’t included on the Hits collection.

Dance into the Light (1996):

Like Both Sides, this album failed to hit the U.S. top 10 and didn’t even generate a top-40 hit in America.

Hits (1998):

Collin’s 1998 Hits collection gathered some of his biggest singles from six studio albums as well as cuts from several different soundtracks: “Against All Odds” from the 1984 soundtrack of the same name, “Separate Lives” from 1985’s White Nights, and “A Groovy Kind of Love” and “Two Hearts,” both from 1988’s Buster soundtrack. Also included was “Easy Lover,” his duet with Philip Bailey from 1984, featured on Bailey’s Chinese Wall album. The collection included one new song – a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors.” All told, the compilation included fourteen U.S. top 40 hits, seven of which reached #1.
