Progressive-rock group Genesis formed in 1966. Original frontman Peter Gabriel went solo in 1975 and was replaced on vocals by the band’s drummer Phil Collins, who stayed with the group until 1992, maintaining a simultaneous solo career from 1981 on. Guitarist/bassist Mike Rutherford formed the side project Mike + the Mechanics in 1985 and keyboardist Tony Banks released solo material along the way. This list focuses on the material they created within and outside of Genesis.

A Brief History:

Phil Collins made his name as the drummer of Genesis, later becoming the band’s lead singer after Peter Gabriel’s departure in 1975. In 1981, he released his first solo album. Through the ‘80s and ‘90s, he continued to work with Genesis and release solo albums. The Hits compilation he released in 1998 covers six of those studio albums, indicated below.

Face Value (1981):

Face Value was only represented by one song on the Hits set although four songs from the album charted, including the U.S. top-20 hit “I Missed Again.”

Hello, I Must Be Going! (1982):

Like Face Value, this album was only represented with one song despite eight chart hits, most notably “I Don’t Care Anymore,” a top-40 hit which also hit #3 on the album rock chart.

Both Sides (1993):

Collins’ heydays were behind him as this album failed to match the success of his last two albums, 1985’s No Jacket Required and 1989’s …But Seriously. Both albums hit #1 and produced four top-ten hits each in the United States. Both Sides, however, failed to send any songs into the top 20 and the album didn’t even make the top 10. The album did produce two top-40 hits, “Both Sides of the Story” and “Everyday,” the latter which wasn’t included on the Hits collection.

Dance into the Light (1996):

Like Both Sides, this album failed to hit the U.S. top 10 and didn’t even generate a top-40 hit in America.

Hits (1998):

Collin’s 1998 Hits collection gathered some of his biggest singles from six studio albums as well as cuts from several different soundtracks: “Against All Odds” from the 1984 soundtrack of the same name, “Separate Lives” from 1985’s White Nights, and “A Groovy Kind of Love” and “Two Hearts,” both from 1988’s Buster soundtrack. Also included was “Easy Lover,” his duet with Philip Bailey from 1984, featured on Bailey’s Chinese Wall album. The collection included one new song – a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “True Colors.” All told, the compilation included fourteen U.S. top 40 hits, seven of which reached #1.

About the Song:

“Against All Odds” was Collins’ first of seven songs to top the Billboard Hot 100 and his first of six songs to hit that chart which he wrote specifically for a film soundtrack. WK It also hit #1 in Canada, Ireland, and Norway. WK Interestingly, it peaked at #2 in the UK, but two different cover versions made it to the pinnacle. In September 2000, Mariah Carey and Westlife took it to the top and in January 2005 Steve Brookstein, the first winner of The X Factor, landed his version at #1. WK

The song, featured in the 1984 movie of the same name, was a power ballad about seeking reconciliation with an ex-lover even though it is “against all odds.” Collins was on tour with Genesis when the film’s director, Taylor Hackford, flew to Chicago to meet him and show him a rough cut of the film to get him to appear on the soundtrack. Collins watched it on videotape in his hotel room and said yes. WK

Hackford also directed the video clip for the song, which was the #1 MTV video for several weeks. Gary LeMel, senior vice president of music for Columbia Pictures, thought the video added at least $5 million to the movie’s box office. Hackford has said the song, which was featured in the closing credits of the movie, directly contributed to the increase of box office sales. WK Hackford did have one complaint. Collins seemed intent on singing “against the odds” instead of “all.” Collins said, “It just tripped off the tongue easier.” SF

Collins adapted a song originally called “How Can You Just Sit There?” from sessions for his debut album, Face Value (1981). It was inspired by his divorce from his first wife. He said that it transformed him into a lyricist as well as a musician. WK His efforts received nominations for Song of the Year both from the Academy Awards and Golden Globes.
