About the Album:

Greatest-hits collections are already shameless money grabs from record companies, but nothing is more shameful than the collections that follow the first. Rather than pick up where the first left off, second greatest-hits collections usually replicate much of what was on the first set and then add more recent material. If the record companies cared about the fans, they wouldn’t be as interested in a career retrospective (at least not at this stage) when a Greatest Hits Volume II is more respectful of those who already bought the first collection.

In the case of The Essentials, a whopping thirteen songs are featured on this set and Greatest Hits. That leaves eight songs to represent the four studio albums released since then. However, this set completely skips over Sonic Highways, which includes “Something from Nothing,” a #1 hit on the mainstream rock and alternative rock charts. “Congregation” and “Run” were also chart-toppers on the mainstream rock chart but aren’t featured here.

But Here We Are (2023):

Grunge/Post-Grunge: Top 100 Songs

Grunge/
Post-Grunge:

Top 100 Songs

After Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell committed suicide in 2017, I posted a list of the top 50 grunge songs as a tribute. That list, as with amost Dave’s Music Database lists, was created by aggregating multiple other lists.

However, there is a challenge with creating such a list. Grunge was a fusion of punk and heavy metal which originated out of Seattle and bands such as Nirvana, Pearl, Jam, Soundgarden, and Alice in Chains. The movement developed in the latter half of the ‘80s and peaked in the early ‘90s.

While its rise and fall was quick, it birthed a revival of interest in guitar-based, alternative rock. When record companies started rushing to sign similar-sounding bands, another movement was born: post-grunge. Often these groups have been critically dismissed as less authentic, cash-in versions of grunge. As with all genres, though, the lines are never completely clear. Some bands such as Bush and Collective Soul walked a tightrope, not clearly falling in one camp or the other. Others, such as Nickelback and Creed, sold boatloads but came to be reviled by critics.

In any event, I’ve posted two lists – one focused on grunge and the other on post-grunge. Some songs qualified for both lists but were only listed on one. So here we go – the two lists – one on the top 50 grunge songs and the other on the top 50 post-grunge songs.

The Top 909 of the 1990s at 90.9 The Bridge

1990-1999:

Top 909 Songs According to
90.9 The Bridge

Over the fourth of July holiday 2021, Kansas City radio station 90.9 The Bridge did a countdown of the top 909 songs of the 1990s, as determined by listener votes. Note that there are some songs with release dates in the 1980s. These are not typos. In some cases, a 1990s re-release or remix or live version may have prompted The Bridge to include the song on the list. In some cases, they may have just mssed the mark.

About the Song:

Dave Grohl had already cemented himself a role in rock history as the drummer for Nirvana from 1990 to 1994. However, after Kurt Cobain, the band’s lead singer and guitarist, committed suicide, it appeared Grohl had likely reached his peak. After all, Nirvana had been celebrated as one of the most influential bands in history. There was nowhere to go but down.

Grohl, however, demonstrated that he was more than just a guitarist when he took up a new project. Initially he formed Foo Fighters as a one-man project but when the 1995 self-titled album went platinum and spawned three top-10 alternative rock hits, he assembled a band that would eventually make him one of the rare two-time Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees.

The second album, 1997’s The Colour and the Shape, was a full-fledged band effort which reached #10 on the U.S. album charts and went double platinum. It generated three more top-10 alternative rock hits, including “Everlong.” It would come to be known as the Foo Fighters’ signature song, WK having been performed in all but four of the band’s four full-length concerts for a total of more than 1000 performances. WK

It is “a song of undying love, apparently written in the darkest hour of all.” DT He’d been frozen out of his bank account, DT was going through a divorce from photographer Jennifer Youngblood, and was homeless, SF sleeping in a sleeping bag at a friend’s house. Two members of the band were on the verge of quitting. SF

Grohl wrote the song in 45 minutes, inspired by his romance with Louise Post of the band Veruca Salt. He said, “That song’s about a girl that I’d fallen in love with and it was basically about being connected to someone so much, that not only do you love them physically and spiritually, but when you sing along with them you harmonize perfectly.” WK
