About Relics:

With only three albums under their belt, this collection may have seemed unnecessary. However, since Pink Floyd released several singles not featured on albums, it made sense to gather them alongside a few album cuts. Unfortunately, that’s not quite what this set does. There are two singles, three B-sides of singles not on this collection, one unreleased song, and five cuts from the band’s first three albums. A better compilation would have simply gathered the singles and B-sides and maybe thrown in the unreleased “Biding My Time.”

  • Arnold Layne (Barrett) [2:56] (3/11/67, 6 CL, 20 UK) R, W, E
  • See Emily Play Barrett) [2:53] (6/17/67, 3 CL, 6 UK) R, W, E, F

  • Biding My Time (Waters) [5:18] (recorded 1969)

About Echoes:

A double-disc retrospective of Pink Floyd was long overdue. This collection covers most of the necessary songs, but the non-chronological order makes for songs that have no business being next to each other. 1994’s “High Hopes” followed by 1967’s “Bike”? These are very different bands with very different sounds and it makes for a very disruptive flow. “Echoes,” “Marooned,” “Shine on You Crazy Dimaond,” and “One of These Days” are edited versions of the originals.

Tracks Not on Previously Noted Albums:

  • When the Tigers Broke Free (Waters) [3:42] (7/26/82, 39 UK) E

About A Foot in the Door:

A single-disc, career-spanning retrospective of Pink Floyd may sound like a good idea for the casual fans, but it ends up omitting so much that it can hardly be considered a representation of the band. Considering the flaws in the two-disc Echoes set, there was no way this could end up an improvement on that.
