About The Early Singles:

While Pink Floyd became known as an album-oriented band, their early years were marked by a series of singles. When the box set Shine On was released in 1992, it featured a special collection of those early singles alongside the albums A Saucerful of Secrets (1968), Meddle (1971), The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979), and A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987).

About Relics:

With only three albums under their belt, this collection may have seemed unnecessary. However, since Pink Floyd released several singles not featured on albums, it made sense to gather them alongside a few album cuts. Unfortunately, that’s not quite what this set does. There are two singles, three B-sides of singles not on this collection, one unreleased song, and five cuts from the band’s first three albums. A better compilation would have simply gathered the singles and B-sides and maybe thrown in the unreleased “Biding My Time.”

About Is There Anybody Out There?:

Pink Floyd only did a handful of live shows in support of their 1979 album The Wall due to its complicated and expensive stage production. This live performance captures a full performance of the album as well as a few cuts, like “What Shall We Do Now?” and “The Last Few Bricks” that were not on the original studio release.

About Delicate Sound of Thunder:

In 1969, Pink Floyd released Ummagumma, which was comprised of one disc of studio material and one of live recordings. They then went nearly two decades before releasing another official live album. Delicate Sound of Thunder captures Pink Floyd in their first post-Roger Waters tour and considering how well it sold, he wasn’t missed. This two-disc set relies way too heavily on 1987’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason (the entire album is featured on the 2019 reissue) but there’s still plenty of the expected classics.

The Division Bell (1994)

  1. Cluster One [5:56]

Total Running Time: 105:21

Rating:

3.773 out of 5.00 (average of 20 ratings)

About Pulse:

This live album feels largely unnecessary given that Pink Floyd had just released a live album prior to 1994’s studio album The Division Bell. Then again, Pulse had the selling point that it featured an entire live performance of Dark Side of the Moon.

About Echoes:

A double-disc retrospective of Pink Floyd was long overdue. This collection covers most of the necessary songs, but the non-chronological order makes for songs that have no business being next to each other. 1994’s “High Hopes” followed by 1967’s “Bike”? These are very different bands with very different sounds and it makes for a very disruptive flow. “Echoes,” “Marooned,” “Shine on You Crazy Diamond,” and “One of These Days” are edited versions of the originals.

Total Running Time: 79:39

Rating:

4.490 out of 5.00 (average of 6 ratings)

About A Foot in the Door:

A single-disc, career-spanning retrospective of Pink Floyd may sound like a good idea for the casual fans, but it ends up omitting so much that it can hardly be considered an accurate representation of the band. Considering the flaws in the two-disc Echoes set, there was no way this could end up an improvement on that.
