Tori Amos: A Retrospective (1988-2024)

Tori Amos

A Retrospective: 1988-2024

Overview:

Born: Myra Ellen Amos
When: August 22, 1963
Where: Newton, North Carolina

Alternative-rock singer/songwriter and pianist Tori Amos is a classically trained musician with a mezz-soprano vocal range. At age five, she become the youngest person admitted to the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins University, where she was given a full scholarship. It was discontinued when she was eleven for insubordination.

By age 17, Amos had put together a number of homemade demo tapes and her father would send them to record companies and producers. She spent several years performing on the piano bar circuit in the Washington D.C. area before moving to Los Angeles. She fronted a rock band that released Y Kant Tori Read in 1988. It was a commercial failure, but her next outing, 1992’s Little Earthquakes, brought success and a dedicated audience. She was a significant artist in the female-driven singer/songwriter movement of the 1990s.

About the Album:

Covers albums often feel like throwaways from artists trying to buy time until they come up with new ideas. Whether intended or not, the album comes across as a concept album that probes into the psyche of a female killer. Go to the DMDB page for more about this album.

Total Running Time: 78:00

About the Album:

After Amos’ departure from Atlantic Records, this compilation was put together to cover her work from the ‘90s. As one would expect from Tori Amos, this isn’t quite a conventional “greatest hits.” There are plenty of songs that were chart singles (“Silent All These Years,” “Me and a Gun,” “Crucify,” “Winter,” “Cornflake Girl,” “God,” “Professional Widow,” “Spark,” “Jackie’s Strength,” “Bliss”). However, there are also a few too many non-album cuts (“Precious Things,” an extended version of “Way Down,” “Mr. Zebra,” “Playboy Mommy,” “Baker Baker,” “Tear in Your Hand”) at the expense of other chart songs that would have been nice to see here (“China,” “Pretty Good Year,” “Past the Mission,” “Hey Jupiter,” “Caught a Lite Sneeze,” “A Sorta Fairytale”).

This collection includes new songs “Angels” and “Snow Cherries from France” as well as re-recorded versions of “Mary” (originally a B-side to the 1992 single “Crucify”) and “Sweet Dreams” (originally a B-side to the 1992 single “Winter”).

Total Running Time: 79:31

About the Album:

This was Amos’ second release through Epic Records. By this time in her career, Amos was firmly established as a “heritage artist;” that is, she could still land a top-ten album out of the gate because of her strong fan base, but then the sales would drop off quickly before the once-platinum artist could even approach gold sales. It was supported by a couple of singles that went nowhere.

This was considered a concept album, wrapped around the practice of beekeeping and how it connected to female empowerment. The songs are divided into six “gardens.”
