Total Running Time: 62:09 About the Album:Covers albums often feel like throwaways from artists trying to buy time until they come up with new ideas. As one would expect from Tori Amos, this isn’t quite a conventional “greatest hits.” There are plenty of songs that were chart singles (“Silent All These Years,” “Me and a Gun,” “Crucify,” “Winter,” “Cornflake Girl,” “God,” “Professional Widow,” “Spark,” “Jackie’s Strength,” “Bliss”). However, there are also a few too many non-album cuts (“Precious Things,” an extended version of “Way Down,” “Mr. Zebra,” “Playboy Mommy,” “Baker Baker,” “Tear in Your Hand”) at the expense of other chart songs that would have been nice to see here (“China,” “Pretty Good Year,” “Past the Mission,” “Hey Jupiter,” “Caught a Lite Sneeze,” “A Sorta Fairytale”).This collection includes new songs “Angels” and “Snow Cherries from France” as well as re-recorded versions of “Mary” (originally a B-side to the 1992 single “Crucify”) and “Sweet Dreams” (originally a B-side to the 1992 single “Winter”). Total Running Time: 79:31 About the Album:This was Amos’ second release through Epic Records. By this time in her career, Amos was firmly established as a “heritage artist;” that is, she could still land a top-ten album out of the gate because of her strong fan base, but then the sales would drop off quickly before the once-platinum artist could even approach gold sales. It was supported by a couple of singles that went nowhere. This was considered a concept album, wrapped around the practice of beekeeping and how it connected to female empowerment. The songs are divided into six “gardens.” |
