About the Song:

Armando Christian Pérez, known as Pitbull, was born in 1981 in Miami, Florida. The Latin rapper first charted in 2004 with M.I.A.M.I., a gold-selling top-20 album, and its top-40 hit “Cujo.” He landed his first top-10 hit in 2009 with “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” and topped the charts with “Give Me Everything” in 2011. He’d racked up eight top-ten hits by the time he hit #1 in 2013 with “Timber.”

The song was the lead single from his EP Meltdown and featured American singer Ke$ha. This was the ninth top-ten hit for each of them. In the UK, it was the third #1 song for each of them. The pair had previously worked together on the 2009 Pitbull song “Girls” and remixes of Ke$ha’s songs “Tik Tok” and “Crazy Kids.” Pitbull initially wanted Rihanna for the song but she wasn’t available. SF

The song was produced and written by Dr. Luke among others. It hit #1 in some fifteen countries and sold nearly ten million copies worldwide in 2014. WK

The song features harmonica, which gives it “a country square dance vibe.” SF Pitbull said he was inspired to use the harmonica after hearing Avicii’s hit song “Wake Me Up.” SF In 2014, Lee Oskar and others filed a copyright infringement lawsuit that the harmonica melody in “Timber” is identical to the one in Oskar’s 1978 song “San Francisco Bay.” SF

Meanwhile the title, a reference to what lumberjacks yell when cutting down trees, “gives the song a rustic vibe and creates a play on the phrase ‘It’s going down.’ We know Pitbull won’t be working in a forest anytime soon, so it becomes a big party metaphor.” SF

VEVO’s Certified Award for Videos with 100 Million Views

image from Billboard.biz

Originally posted 7/11/12. Updated 2/6/13.

VEVO – the company which has made its existence off official music video posts on YouTube – announced a new award on July 11, 2012. The Vevo Certified award is given to videos which have garnered 100 million views. As stated at vevo.com, “VEVO’s video view counts represent the only official metric across the digital landscape, including online and mobile views as well as those of syndication partner sites like AOL, Facebook, Yahoo! Music, and YouTube.” Here’s the top 20:

VEVO: The Top 20 Most Watched Videos of All Time

1. Justin Bieber with Ludacris “Baby” (2010)
2. Jennifer Lopez with Pitbull “On the Floor” (2011)
3. Eminem with Rihanna “Love the Way You Lie” (2010)
4. LMFAO with Lauren Bennett & GoonRock “Party Rock Anthem” (2011)
5. Shakira with Freshlyground…Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” (2010)
6. Lady Gaga “Bad Romance” (2009)
7. Don Omar with Lucenzo “Danza Kuduro” (2011)
8. Carly Rae Jepsen “Call Me Maybe” (2012)
9. Eminem “Not Afraid” (2010)
10. Pitbull “Rain Over Me” (2011)

11. Adele “Rolling in the Deep” (2010)
12. Justin Bieber “Never Say Never” (2010)
13. Katy Perry “Firework” (2010)
14. One Direction “What Makes You Beautiful” (2011)
15. Miley Cyrus “Party in the U.S.A.” (2009)
16. Justin Bieber “One Time” (2009)
17. Nicki Minaj “Super Bass” (2011)
18. Rihanna “What’s My Name?” (2010)
19. Pitbull “Give Me Everything” (2011)
20. Rihanna “Only Girl in the World” (2010)

The dominance of videos from just the last couple years plays out throughout the list. Of the 140 videos which have reached the 100 million mark, only 32 were pre-2009 songs. Only two videos on the list date to the 20th century – Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” (1983) and Guns N’ Roses “November Rain” (1992).

Also apparent from the list is the predominance of certain artists. Justin Bieber places two videos in the top ten and 13 on total list. Other artists with multiple video as either a lead or support artist include Rihanna (11), Beyonce (7), Black Eyed Peas (7), Eminem (7), Lady Gaga (7), Lil Wayne (7), Katy Perry (7), Chris Brown (6), David Guetta (6), Nicki Minaj (6), LMFAO (5), Pitbull (5), and Shakira (5). Those artists alone comprise half the list.

Interestingly, the VEVO list serves neither as a true indicator of the most celebrated videos of all time or even the biggest hits of the 21st century. Only 21 of the videos also rank in the DMDB list of the best songs of the 21st century. The difference between the VEVO list and the DMDB’s list of the 100 videos of all time is even more staggering. The latter, which aggregates 56 best-of-all-time video lists as well as 20 potential video awards, includes only three songs from the VEVO list: “Thriller,” “November Rain,” and Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It).”

About the Song:

“Give Me Everything” was the second single from Pitbull’s fifth album Planet Pit. For the song, the Cuban-American rapper tapped dance music producer DJ Afrojack and R&B singer Ne-Yo. He also wanted Shakira, but she wasn’t available so he turned to model/actress Nayer, with whom he’d worked before. It was the first trip to the top of the U.S. pop charts for Pitbull, Afrojack, and Nayer, but Ne-Yo had been there before with “So Sick” in 2006. SF The song also peaked at #1 in more than a dozen other countries. WK

Afrojack came up with the song while in the shower and headed straight to the studio without even getting dressed. SF He told Billboard, “I think I was in the studio for like fie hours with the towel around me, and I made like the whole instrument on the track.” SF

One line in the song says, “I got it locked up like Lindsay Lohan.” The actress wasn’t happy about the song, even though Pitbull tried to claim the line wasn’t about her stint in jail, but that “if you got it locked up, it means you run the show.” SF Lohan wasn’t buying it and slapped a lawsuit on Pitbull. The lawsuit was dismissed on the basis that it didn’t violate Lohan’s right to privacy or exploit her name to sell records. SF

Rolling Stone referred to the song as a “club-pop cut” WK and Yahoo! Music’s Paul Grein said it combines hip hop, pop, and “Broadway-style theatricality.” WK NME magazine criticized the song for too many random components, saying, “So, how many types of wrong is this? Well, you’ve got your earnest vocal gibbering about living in the moment. You’ve got the cheap rave wibble, a high frequency irritation that buzzes through like a fly trapped in jism.” WK
