About the Song:

Singer/songwriter Pink Pantheress was born Victoria Walker in 2001 in England. By age 14, she was singing cover songs in a rock band. While studying film at the University of the Arts London, she used GarageBand to record songs she’d written in high school. In December 2020, she got more than half a million likes for a video posted to TikTok. Her songs “Break It Off” and “Pain” then went viral in early 2021.

In April 2021, she signed a record deal with Parlophone. She reached #27 on the UK charts with “Just for Me” which earned nominations for an iHeartRadio Music Award and Ivor Novello Award. Mura Masa, who produced the song, worked with Pink Pantheress again on “Boy’s a Liar” at his home studio. They recorded the song in about two hours and released it as a single in November 2022. It is “a dance-pop, bubblegum pop, and synth-pop song with a Jersey club beat.” WK She sings about “her insecurities with feeling unattractive to her partner” WK and that “she only seems to appeal to him when she’s plastered with makeup.” SF

The song became a success when a remixed version, known as “Boy’s a Liar, Part 2,” was released in February 2023. It featured Ice Spice, an American rapper born Isis Naija Gaston in the Bronx in 2000. She started releasing singles in 2021, reaching the Billboard Hot 100 with her January 2023 single “In Ha Mood.” “Boy’s a Liar, Part 2,” got to #2 on the UK charts and was Pink Pantheress’s first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, going all the way to #3. It was the lead single from her debut album, Heaven Knows.

Pink Pantheress decided to work with Ice Spice after they messaged each other on Instagram. Ice Spiced added a third verse to the song in which she “continues the theme of addressing a deceitful partner.” SF Exclaim! rated it the best song of 2023, saying “the collaboration sees both artists at the height of their abilities, uniting against duplicitous dudes over catchy-as-can-be production that plinks and bloops like an SNES soundtrack.” SF
