Sid & Nancy opened

Directing: Alex Cox

Writing: Alex Cox, Abbe Wool

Starring: Gary Oldman, Chloe Webb, David Hayman

This British biographical film focuses on the life of Sid Vicious (Oldman) and his tumultuous relationship with his girlfriend, Nancy Spungen (Webb). Vicious was the bassist with the punk rock band the Sex Pistols, although he didn’t join until after the band had already released its one and only album and taken England by storm in 1976 and ’77.

Sid meets Nancy, an American groupie following the Sex Pistols, in 1977. He rejected her initially, but they eventually bonded over heroin use. When the band head to the United States to tour in 1978, she is devastated at being left behind. Sid is often strung out and violent while on tour and the band breaks up on January 17, 1978.

Nancy reunites with Sid in New York City and he attempts to start a solo career. They descend into heroin addiction and make a suicide pact. They settle into a drug-dependent life of squalor at the Hotel Chelsea in New York, where things come to a tragic end when he stabs her to death on October 12, 1978. Four months later, Sid was also dead. He overdosed on heroin on February 2, 1979 while on bail for being accused of second-degree murder.

Rotten Tomatoes gave the film an 88% approval rating, saying that it was “a surprisingly touching love story, and Gary Oldman is outstanding as the late punk rock icon Sid Vicious.” WK Critic Roger Ebert referred to the movie’s titular couple as “punk rock’s Romeo and Juliet” and said Oldman deserved an Oscar nomination for the performance. In 2008, Premiere magazine ranked it one of the 100 greatest performances of all time. WK

Dave’s Music Database ranks Sid & Nancy as one of the top 10 music movies of all time.
